With approximately 47 million children exposed to dangerous levels of lead, the competition aimed to generate actionable strategies to reduce contamination from sources such as industrial waste, unsafe paints, used batteries, polluted water supplies, and hazardous toys. The initiative highlighted the urgency of addressing environmental health through youth engagement and innovation. Under the leadership of Dr. Moeed W. Yusuf, Vice Chancellor of BNU, the competition emphasized the role of policy-driven, sustainable solutions. Students were encouraged to think critically about long-term mitigation measures and advocate for practical implementation at both local and national levels. The winning team from the University of Health Sciences (UHS), Lahore, proposed a nanosensor-driven national lead screening policy. Second place was awarded to Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU), Islamabad, for their AI-based approach to environmental contamination control. Third place went to BNU’s Department of Economics for their project on mitigating lead poisoning through food and farming practices. The event concluded with recognition of all participants for their creativity, commitment, and contribution to tackling a critical yet often overlooked health issue in Pakistan.

Day 1 of the event kicked off with a warm welcome to Guest of Honor, Mr. Badar Khushnood—co-founder of Fishry and Bramerz, and former Chairman of P@SHA. Students showcased their final-year capstone projects in areas such as artificial intelligence, computer vision, cybersecurity, and web and mobile development. The projects were evaluated by a panel of industry experts, including Usman Ahmad Zia (Vice President, CADM Systems Limited), Zunair Haseeb Khan (Vice President QA Services, Systems Ltd), Dr. Fezan Rasool (Team Lead, Machine Learning, Systems Ltd), Syed Moosa Abidi (Business Analyst, Podium), Mr. Shahbaz Ali (Business Development Manager, INDEX Holding), and Dr. Hafsa Zafar (Assistant Professor, University of Management and Technology). The judges praised the originality, relevance, and technical depth of the student work. On Day 2, Chief Guest Mr. Usman Asif, CEO of Devsinc, joined the event and interacted with students and faculty. During the ceremony, Vice Chancellor Mr. Moeed W. He celebrated the outstanding academic performances of 18 graduates who were presented gold medals, with 14 of these awards earned by female students—a testament to the university's commitment to empowering women through education. In total, 531 graduates received their degrees. This included 123 from the Mariam Dawood School of Visual Arts & Design (MDSVAD), 52 from the Razia Hassan School of Architecture (RHSA), 10 from the Seeta Majeed School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (SLASS), 169 from the School of Media & Mass Communication (SMC), 28 from the School of Computer Science and Information Technology (SCIT), 65 from the Institute of Psychology (IP), 18 from the School of Education (SE), and 66 from the School of Management Sciences (SMS). The Chancellor, Mr. Sardar Saleem Haider Khan, extended his heartfelt congratulations to the graduating class, commending their hard work and perseverance. The week-long event aimed not only to educate and raise awareness but also to destigmatize conversations around mental health and HIV/AIDS. The inaugural day of the Mental Health Week kicked off with Inter-University and Inter-Schools/Colleges Poster Competitions. The event, graced by distinguished guests including Prof. Dr. Rafia Rafique, President of the Pakistan Psychological Association, witnessed enthusiastic participation from over 30 educational institutions. The vibrant and thought-provoking posters served as a visual medium to convey messages of mental health awareness and HIV/AIDS prevention. Day two of the event saw the staging of an Inter-University Quiz Competition, which drew participation from 11 dynamic teams representing esteemed educational institutions across the region. The quiz not only tested participants' knowledge about mental health and HIV/AIDS but also served as a platform for fostering healthy competition and collaborative learning. As the week progressed, the focus shifted to artistic expression with the Inter-University Performing Arts Competition. This day provided a creative platform for universities to showcase their artistic prowess while simultaneously promoting mental health awareness and combating the stigma surrounding AIDS. Through captivating performances ranging from theater to music and dance, participants conveyed powerful messages of hope, resilience, and solidarity. The culminating event of Mental Health Week involved a charitable endeavor aimed at spreading joy and compassion to those affected by mental health challenges and HIV/AIDS. Students from BNU assembled care packages filled with essential items and distributed them to patients at Fountain House, a renowned mental health rehabilitation center in Lahore. Beaconhouse National University (BNU) recently convened a consultative workshop of domain experts in the cultural and creative industries to share insights and gather feedback on the ongoing project titled, “Improving Data Collection among National and Provincial Statistical Agencies to Strengthen Policymaking for the Cultural and Creative Industries.” This initiative is funded by the International Fund for Cultural Diversity (IFCD) of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The workshop brought together over 70 professionals, including academics, researchers, policymakers, development experts, cultural professionals, artists, activists, and entrepreneurs, representing a diverse range of stakeholders in cultural and creative industries across Pakistan. Representatives from public sector entities such as the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, Bureau of Statistics Punjab, Punjab Council of the Arts (PUCAR), Planning & Development Board (P&D), Government of the Punjab, Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA), Walled City of Lahore Authority (WCLA), Lahore Arts Council, and Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) attended the workshop. Mr. Zaeem Yaqoob Khan, the Project Lead and Expert, delivered a comprehensive presentation outlining the goals of the UNESCO 2005 convention and providing an overview of the project's background and objectives. This was followed by a detailed presentation by Senior Researcher Syed Amna Hassan on the definition exercise, which synthesized inclusive definitions of "Culture," "Creative Trades," and "Cultural Goods" tailored for Pakistan's context. Senior Researcher Sadaf Akbar presented prototypes of instruments aimed at quantifying the economic contributions of cultural and creative industries. These instruments, developed based on the UNESCO- prescribed domains included Design and Creative Services, Audiovisual and Interactive Media, Visual Arts and Crafts, Performance and Celebration, and Music. The adoption of UNESCO's Culture, 2030 Indicators methodology was highlighted for its ability to measure economic contributions while mapping impacts on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Following the presentations, breakout sessions facilitated direct engagement between the project team and experts, enabling the collection of feedback and recommendations. Mr. Zaeem Yaqoob Khan expressed gratitude to all participants for their valuable insights, emphasizing the importance of their contributions in refining and validating the project's instruments. The project now progresses to its next phase, focusing on detailed mapping exercises and field testing of the instruments in selected cities. The ultimate goal is to develop a validated framework for estimating local gross domestic product within the cultural and creative sectors. The project team anticipates presenting its findings at a conference scheduled for February next year.
