Bamboo is a fast-growing, renewable resource that absorbs more CO₂ and releases more oxygen than traditional trees. By planting bamboo on campus, students will gain access to local, eco-friendly building materials, empowering them to recycle, reuse, and rethink sustainable construction practices while reducing the carbon footprint associated with transportation and synthetic alternatives. PGL believes that empowering the next generation of architects and environmental leaders is key to long-term climate resilience. This plantation not only enhances campus biodiversity and air quality but also educates students in responsible material sourcing and ecological responsibility.

With approximately 47 million children exposed to dangerous levels of lead, the competition aimed to generate actionable strategies to reduce contamination from sources such as industrial waste, unsafe paints, used batteries, polluted water supplies, and hazardous toys. The initiative highlighted the urgency of addressing environmental health through youth engagement and innovation. Under the leadership of Dr. Moeed W. Yusuf, Vice Chancellor of BNU, the competition emphasized the role of policy-driven, sustainable solutions. Students were encouraged to think critically about long-term mitigation measures and advocate for practical implementation at both local and national levels. The winning team from the University of Health Sciences (UHS), Lahore, proposed a nanosensor-driven national lead screening policy. Second place was awarded to Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU), Islamabad, for their AI-based approach to environmental contamination control. Third place went to BNU’s Department of Economics for their project on mitigating lead poisoning through food and farming practices. The event concluded with recognition of all participants for their creativity, commitment, and contribution to tackling a critical yet often overlooked health issue in Pakistan.

Day 1 of the event kicked off with a warm welcome to Guest of Honor, Mr. Badar Khushnood—co-founder of Fishry and Bramerz, and former Chairman of P@SHA. Students showcased their final-year capstone projects in areas such as artificial intelligence, computer vision, cybersecurity, and web and mobile development. The projects were evaluated by a panel of industry experts, including Usman Ahmad Zia (Vice President, CADM Systems Limited), Zunair Haseeb Khan (Vice President QA Services, Systems Ltd), Dr. Fezan Rasool (Team Lead, Machine Learning, Systems Ltd), Syed Moosa Abidi (Business Analyst, Podium), Mr. Shahbaz Ali (Business Development Manager, INDEX Holding), and Dr. Hafsa Zafar (Assistant Professor, University of Management and Technology). On Day 2, Chief Guest Mr. Usman Asif, CEO of Devsinc, joined the event and interacted with students and faculty. The day's sessions opened with two thematic panels — The Economics of Culture and The Impact of Culture — featuring presentations from national scholars on topics ranging from the role of traditional crafts and the film industry to the potential of Pakistan's tourism and secondhand retail sectors. Mr. Zaeem Yaqoob Khan, Project Lead of the UNESCO IFCD Project and Executive Director at BNU, shared an in-depth progress report on the definition and instrument development exercises undertaken by the project team. He also outlined the learnings from the pilot study and the ongoing field rollout activities planned to validate new tools for data collection. Senior Expert and Project Co-Lead, Dr. Izza Aftab, presented preliminary findings from the provinces of Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan. She highlighted the emerging economic contributions of various CCI sectors, including music, festivals, food, gaming, textiles, and artisanal crafts, as captured through newly validated instruments. The conference concluded with an engaging panel conversation featuring celebrated figures in the arts and academia — Professor Salima Hashmi, Dr. Tamkenat Mansoor, photographer and cultural practitioner Khaula Jamil, and creative strategist Yaser Awan — who shared insights on amplifying Pakistan’s cultural sector and building sustainable creative economies. BNU’s nominations include Most Innovative Teacher of the Year, awarded to Muhammad Naveed Aasim, Senior Lecturer and Head of the BS Communication and Immersive Media program at the School of Media and Mass Communication, for his pioneering teaching methodologies. The UNESCO Chair, led by internationally acclaimed artist Professor Rashid Rana as the first Chair holder, aims to break boundaries, generate knowledge, and build equitable societies. During the inauguration ceremony, Professor Rana outlined a visionary approach to leveraging art as a means of empowerment and education, emphasizing BNU's role in leading this transformative initiative. With its strong foundation in liberal arts and creative disciplines, BNU stands as an ideal platform to advance UNESCO's mission. As part of the global UNESCO Chairs Programme—launched in 1992 with over 1,000 Chairs in 120 countries, including eight in Pakistan—this initiative aligns with themes of climate change, digital transformation, and now, inclusion through art. The establishment of this Chair not only enhances BNU's global engagement but also reinforces its dedication to using art as a powerful tool for innovation and societal development. A key highlight of the gala was the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award to Syed Babar Ali, a visionary leader and philanthropist, by members of the BNU Board of Directors. Respected dignitaries, including Mrs. Nasreen Mahmud Kasuri, Mr. Khurshid Mahmud Kasuri, Mr. Kasim Mahmud Kasuri, Mr. Nassir Kasuri, Dr. Parvez Hassan, and Vice Chancellor Dr. Moeed W. During the ceremony, Vice Chancellor Mr. Moeed W. Yusuf delivered a compelling convocation address, highlighting the university’s achievements over the past year and presenting the annual report to the Chancellor. He celebrated the outstanding academic performances of 18 graduates who were presented gold medals, with 14 of these awards earned by female students—a testament to the university's commitment to empowering women through education. In total, 531 graduates received their degrees. This included 123 from the Mariam Dawood School of Visual Arts & Design (MDSVAD), 52 from the Razia Hassan School of Architecture (RHSA), 10 from the Seeta Majeed School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (SLASS), 169 from the School of Media & Mass Communication (SMC), 28 from the School of Computer Science and Information Technology (SCIT), 65 from the Institute of Psychology (IP), 18 from the School of Education (SE), and 66 from the School of Management Sciences (SMS). The Chancellor, Mr. Sardar Saleem Haider Khan, extended his heartfelt congratulations to the graduating class, commending their hard work and perseverance. He also praised the gold medalists for their exceptional academic achievements. The School of Education launched its Expert Edge Series with an insightful panel discussion titled "Fashion Footprint: Sustainability in Style" on October 29, 2024, moderated by Ms. Naureen Zaman, assistant professor and series coordinator. Prof. Dr. Amra Raza, Dean of the School of Education, opened the event with a warm welcome. The esteemed panel featured sustainability expert and climate activist Mr. Jawad Sohail; Mr. Ali Hassan from Serena Textiles; designer Ms. Saman Arif of Nayna Fashion House; CEO Mr. Sarim Mehmood of Fruits of Sustainability; and human rights lawyer Mr. Salman Jameel. The discussion covered the fashion industry's environmental impact, labor rights, and the role of consumers in fostering sustainable practices. Ms. Naureen guided the conversation with compelling questions that highlighted the industry's critical challenges and solutions. The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Ms. Shabana Ahmed, head of MPhil Linguistics and TESOL, and panelists were gifted Neem Tree Seedlings and other meaningful souvenirs, symbolizing the event's commitment to sustainability.

Distinguished panelists included Dr. Akmal Hussain, Professor at BNU’s School of Management Sciences, and Dr. Yunus Samad, Professor of South Asian Studies at LUMS. Ambassador Hashmi emphasized that while political diplomacy forms the foundation of bilateral relations, genuine understanding between nations stems from cultural exchanges and meaningful people-to-people interactions. She underscored the importance of building connections through education, tourism, and shared cultural experiences, allowing citizens of both countries to understand each other’s societies better. In particular, she highlighted the pivotal role of language learning in strengthening ties. With China being one of Pakistan’s key neighbors, she encouraged Pakistani citizens to engage more actively with the Chinese language, culture, and societal structures. Likewise, she noted that fostering reciprocal understanding would enhance the bond between both countries. The lecture concluded with an engaging interactive session, where students and distinguished guests exchanged ideas and asked questions, contributing to a vibrant discussion on the future of Pakistan-China relations.

The walk, which aimed to promote mental health awareness and encourage community support, saw enthusiastic participation from students and faculty. Participants walked through the campus, carrying banners and placards with messages advocating for mental health awareness and support. Following the walk, a bake sale was held, featuring a variety of homemade treats. The proceeds from the bake sale will be used to fund mental health initiatives. Dr. Ruhi Khalid emphasized the importance of such events in fostering a supportive community and reducing the stigma associated with mental health issues. The event was a significant step towards promoting mental health awareness and creating a supportive environment for individuals struggling with mental health.

Teams from prominent universities, including The Punjab University, Government College University Lahore, Lahore School of Economics, and Forman Christian College University, participated in the event. BNU's team showcased their expertise in economics, critical thinking, and problem-solving, surpassing competitors from these well-known institutes in Lahore. This achievement highlights the dedication and talent of BNU's students and reinforces the university’s commitment to fostering excellence in academic and extracurricular pursuits. Through cycling, students will be able to reduce their carbon emissions while also promoting fitness and healthy living. The ceremony was graced by the presence of Mr. Arsalan Muhammad Iqbal, Chief Risk Officer of BOP, and Mr. Asad Zia, Head of Marketing at BOP. Both distinguished guests expressed their strong support for the initiative and shared their vision of a sustainable future. This groundbreaking agreement with Ignite - National Technology Fund, under the Ministry of IT and Telecom Pakistan, is set to transform the startup landscape. NIC Lahore, now located at Daftarkhwan Vogue, will support 50 startups annually with funding, resources, and international accelerator programs. Our students will have unparalleled opportunities to engage with cutting-edge technologies and gain real-world experience through a satellite incubation facility on our campus. Prof. Dr. Atif Hassan, the founding Head of the Department of Hospitality Management at BNU, represented the university with distinction. He inaugurated the conference by ceremoniously lighting the traditional oil lamp alongside other keynote speakers and the conference chairperson. In addition to this honor, Dr. Atif Hassan served as an Evaluator for various technical sessions and provided valuable feedback on the research presented. ICOHT 2024 attracted delegates from twenty different nationalities, both in person and online. From June 8 to 15, Beaconhouse National University (BNU) became a vibrant center of artistic expression as the Mariam Dawood School of Visual Arts and Design (MDSVAD) unveiled its Annual Thesis Display. The event transformed the BNU campus into a bustling hub of creativity, showcasing the impressive work of 98 graduating students from diverse disciplines, including BFA Visual Art, BDes Visual Communication Design, BDes Textile, Fashion, and Accessories Design, and BA (Hons) Interdisciplinary Expanded Design & Art. Visitors were immersed in a dynamic world of visual arts and design, experiencing a range of projects that demonstrated the students’ mastery and innovation. The thesis display was a vivid tapestry of creative expression, featuring multimedia visual art installations, sophisticated communication designs, innovative textile and fashion collections, and interdisciplinary projects that bridged art and technology. The exhibit highlighted the diverse talents nurtured within MDSVAD, where students pushed the boundaries of traditional practices and explored contemporary themes through their work. Beaconhouse National University (BNU) recently convened a consultative workshop of domain experts in the cultural and creative industries to share insights and gather feedback on the ongoing project titled, “Improving Data Collection among National and Provincial Statistical Agencies to Strengthen Policymaking for the Cultural and Creative Industries.” This initiative is funded by the International Fund for Cultural Diversity (IFCD) of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The workshop brought together over 70 professionals, including academics, researchers, policymakers, development experts, cultural professionals, artists, activists, and entrepreneurs, representing a diverse range of stakeholders in cultural and creative industries across Pakistan. Representatives from public sector entities such as the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, Bureau of Statistics Punjab, Punjab Council of the Arts (PUCAR), Planning & Development Board (P&D), Government of the Punjab, Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA), Walled City of Lahore Authority (WCLA), Lahore Arts Council, and Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) attended the workshop. Mr. Zaeem Yaqoob Khan, the Project Lead and Expert, delivered a comprehensive presentation outlining the goals of the UNESCO 2005 convention and providing an overview of the project's background and objectives. This was followed by a detailed presentation by Senior Researcher Syed Amna Hassan on the definition exercise, which synthesized inclusive definitions of "Culture," "Creative Trades," and "Cultural Goods" tailored for Pakistan's context. Senior Researcher Sadaf Akbar presented prototypes of instruments aimed at quantifying the economic contributions of cultural and creative industries. These instruments, developed based on the UNESCO- prescribed domains included Design and Creative Services, Audiovisual and Interactive Media, Visual Arts and Crafts, Performance and Celebration, and Music. The adoption of UNESCO's Culture, 2030 Indicators methodology was highlighted for its ability to measure economic contributions while mapping impacts on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Following the presentations, breakout sessions facilitated direct engagement between the project team and experts, enabling the collection of feedback and recommendations. Mr. Zaeem Yaqoob Khan expressed gratitude to all participants for their valuable insights, emphasizing the importance of their contributions in refining and validating the project's instruments. The project now progresses to its next phase, focusing on detailed mapping exercises and field testing of the instruments in selected cities. The ultimate goal is to develop a validated framework for estimating local gross domestic product within the cultural and creative sectors. The project team anticipates presenting its findings at a conference scheduled for February next year.
