Tamara Al-Mashouk Illuminates Memory, Body, and Place in Visual Arts

SVAD Talk hosted Palestinian-Saudi visual artist Tamara Al-Mashouk, exploring memory, the body, and architectural spaces as mediums of expression. Part of the VFA–Toward Decolonial Feminisms course, the session highlighted how her large-scale installations, performances, and video works interrogate collective histories, migration, and belonging, offering students insights into interdisciplinary artistic practices.

Al-Mashouk shared her approach to art as a vessel for memory and resistance. She explained how the body becomes a site of historical and spatial narratives, while architecture and performance reflect movement, identity, and collective experiences.

Through discussion and examples, students engaged with concepts of “going home” and life-giving practices in artistic research. The session emphasized art’s potential to foster dialogue, challenge dominant narratives, and bridge personal and collective reflection.

Tamara Al-Mashouk is a London based Palestinian-Saudi visual artist who incorporates strategies of hosting, art making and live performance across a range of multi-disciplinary projects. Through large-scale installations, performance and video, her work explores: where memory is stored, the body as container, and architecture as body, reflecting on the movement of people, collective histories, and place. She most often works in bodies, in bodies of work.
