SVAD Talk welcomed Javeria Masood, social and international development practitioner, for a session on “Countercuisine: Ethnographic Encounters with Food, Memory and Power.” Part of the Seeds of Resistance: Indigenous Knowledge & Environmental Futures course, the talk examined how culinary practices intersect with culture, memory, and social dynamics, fostering critical and interdisciplinary reflection.
Javeria Masood discussed how food acts as a lens to understand identity, community, and societal hierarchies. Through ethnographic examples, she demonstrated how what we eat, how we prepare it, and who controls it reflects broader patterns of power and resistance.
The session encouraged students to critically examine the social and political dimensions of everyday practices. By connecting food to memory, culture, and agency, Masood inspired students to explore innovative, reflective approaches to research and community engagement.
