IP Holds a Session on AI and the Future of Therapy

Beaconhouse National University’s Institute of Psychology, in collaboration with Connections Clinic, hosted an insightful session titled “Can Psychotherapists Replace Artificial Intelligence?” on April 27, 2026. Led by Prof. Dr. Imran Ijaz Haider, the discussion examined the rapidly evolving relationship between artificial intelligence, psychotherapy, and contemporary mental health practices in Pakistan.

The session explored the increasingly sophisticated role of AI in therapeutic settings, presenting compelling comparisons between human and AI-generated responses to common client concerns. Participants reflected on the striking ability of artificial intelligence systems to simulate empathy, validate emotions, and deliver articulate, structured support within moments. These thought-provoking demonstrations prompted critical conversations about changing client expectations and the growing influence of technology on mental healthcare practices.

Through nuanced discussions on accurate empathy, genuineness, and unconditional positive regard, Prof. Dr. Imran Ijaz Haider emphasized the distinctly human qualities that remain central to effective psychotherapy. Students actively engaged in reflective dialogue on the future relevance of mental health professionals and the transformative impact of AI on assessment, intervention, and therapeutic relationships. The session offered a timely, academically enriching exploration of one of the most significant contemporary debates in psychology and mental health practice.
