Danai Anagnostou Explores Feminist Film, Counter-Cinema, and Archival Practices

SVAD Talk hosted Dr. Danai Anagnostou, film producer, moving image artist, and doctoral researcher at Aalto University, for an inspiring session on feminist film collectives and counter-cinema practices. The lecture, part of the VFA–Toward Decolonial Feminisms course, offered students insight into alternative production methods, archival strategies, and collaborative filmmaking.

Dr. Anagnostou co-founded Kenno Filmi in 2019, a Helsinki-based production company supporting international filmmakers, researchers, and artists. Her research intersects production studies and production history, with a focus on feminist film collectives, collaborative practices, and the creation and preservation of unofficial archives. Supported by the Kone Foundation (2022–2026), her work investigates methods for documenting counter-cinema and amplifying marginalized voices in film.

Her contributions have been recognized internationally: she received the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Artist Fellowship by Artworks (2022–2023), the Audiovisual Women Fellowship by the Erich Pommer Institut (2023–2024), and has been selected for the prestigious Emerging Producers program (2025). During the session, she shared insights from her research and professional practice, emphasizing collaborative filmmaking, archiving alternative narratives, and challenging dominant production histories.

Students engaged in a lively discussion on the ways film can function as both artistic practice and social intervention. By combining theoretical inquiry, production expertise, and archival innovation, Dr. Anagnostou inspired participants to explore feminist, decolonial, and experimental approaches in moving image practices, demonstrating how creative research can generate meaningful cultural and academic impact.
