Muhammad Usman Rana is a talented filmmaker, visual artist, and music producer blending cinema, sound, and contemporary art. With over a decade of teaching and creative experience, he leads media courses, creates documentary and experimental films, produces music, and mentors emerging artists, while pursuing a PhD in Art & Design.
Muhammad Usman Rana is a filmmaker, visual artist, and music producer based in Lahore, blending cinema, sound, and contemporary art. With over a decade of creative practice and teaching experience, he brings a distinctive interdisciplinary approach to media, music, and visual storytelling.
He is currently pursuing a PhD in Art & Design at the University of the Punjab. He holds an MS in Film & TV (Distinction) from Beaconhouse National University, a Master’s degree in Music from the University of the Punjab, and a BS (Hons) in Musicology from the National College of Arts.
Since 2013, Usman has been teaching at Beaconhouse National University, leading courses in Film Production, Music Video Production, Sound Design, and Film Theory & Criticism. He has supervised numerous student projects, developed industry-aligned curricula, and mentored emerging filmmakers. His earlier teaching roles include the University of the Punjab, Aitchison College, and Lahore Grammar School.
As a filmmaker, his work spans documentary, fiction, poetic narrative, and experimental video art. His films, including NACHA, Basit, Makafat, PAY MEM, and TATOO, explore themes of identity, culture, taboo, and social experience. His video art has been exhibited internationally, including at the Kiran Nadar Museum in Delhi and the Lahore Biennale.
An accomplished music producer, Usman has contributed sound and composition for commercial campaigns, short films, telefilms, and independent music projects. His album Meri Dharkan received both national and international release. He frequently conducts workshops on sound design, cinematic storytelling, and South Asian musical traditions, reflecting his commitment to creative learning and artistic dialogue.
