Gwendolyn Kulick DeliversThought-Provoking Talk on Participatory Design

The Mariam Dawood School of Visual Arts and Design (MDSVAD) at BNU hosted an inspiring SVAD Talk featuring Gwendolyn Kulick, Associate Professor of Design Theory at the German University in Cairo. Kulick, who taught at SVAD from 2004 to 2015, returned to share insights from her ongoing design research in Pakistan.

Her talk, titled Designing for Coalescence – A Participatory Design Research Process about Ethical Craft Initiatives in Pakistan, highlighted the evolution of her PhD project, which examined the lived experiences of stakeholders in ethical craft initiatives. Rather than centering on product outcomes or supply chains, her research embraced mutual learning and co-creation, challenging conventional power hierarchies through participatory methods. Kulick’s presentation resonated deeply with faculty and students, offering a compelling look into how design can foster collaboration, cultural sensitivity, and ethical engagement. The session encouraged critical reflection on the role of designers as facilitators of social change within complex local contexts.
