In celebration of Earth Day, the School of Education at Beaconhouse National University (BNU) hosted a compelling session titled “A Cinematic Journey into Sustainability” on May 6, 2025, as part of its ongoing Expert Edge Series. The event featured renowned filmmaker and academic Prof. Dr. Ahmad Bilal, Chairperson of the Department of Graphic Design at Punjab University.
Dr. Amra Raza, Dean of the School of Education, warmly welcomed the speaker and attendees, emphasizing the transformative potential of cinema in fostering awareness and meaningful dialogue around global challenges, particularly the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). She noted the importance of integrating creative expression into education for sustainability. During the session, Dr. Bilal presented three of his short films, each offering a unique lens on environmental and societal issues. Tasalsul focused on the intergenerational responsibility of tree planting, urging audiences to act selflessly for future generations. Virsa, a sequel to the first film, explored the environmental and cultural erosion caused by unchecked urbanization. Rupay Aanay Pai portrayed the psychological impact of financial stress, addressing themes such as corruption, survival, and systemic inequality. In his closing remarks, Dr. Bilal critiqued the capitalist mindset that equates human value with financial status. He called for greater creative freedom for filmmakers to challenge dominant narratives and engage audiences in critical reflection. The School of Education is proud to have hosted such an enriching session and remains committed to advancing conversations on sustainability through art and education.
