Prof. Dr. Amra Raza, the first PhD in English from Punjab University, has served as Director of the Institute of English Studies and Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at PU. Currently Chair of the Punjab Examination Commission, she specializes in South Asian Poetry, Shakespeare, Post-colonial Drama, and TESL, among others.
Prof. Dr. Amra Raza is a distinguished academic and a trailblazer in English studies, holding the honor of being the first PhD graduate in English from the Department of English Language and Literature at the University of the Punjab, Lahore. With a career spanning decades, she has made significant contributions to academia, serving as both the Director of the Institute of English Studies and the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the University of the Punjab. Currently, she is the Dean of the School of Education at Beaconhouse National University (BNU), in addition to holding the esteemed positions of Chair of the Punjab Examination Commission (PEC) and Country Head of Englishers (LLL) International.
Her scholarly expertise encompasses South Asian Poetry, Shakespearean Studies, Post-Colonial Drama and Fiction, Creative Writing, Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL), English Language Teaching (ELT), and Linguistics. She has received the prestigious Jane Townsend Poetry Prize in recognition of her literary contributions. Dr. Raza has played a pivotal role in nurturing young writers, serving as the Editor of Spaces and Places: An Anthology of Young Creative Writers from Pakistan and Co-editor of Voices and Visions: Young Writers from Pakistan. Her research articles and poetry have been widely published in both national and international journals. Additionally, she has served as the Chief Editor for the Journal of Research in Humanities at the Institute of English Studies.
Dr. Raza has actively contributed to faculty development and teacher training, securing Higher Education Commission (HEC) grants for the In-Service Training of English Language Teachers in Punjab. She has led several HEC-sponsored workshops, including Teaching Composition Writing Strategies and Using Indigenous Literature for English Language Instruction at the Undergraduate Level at the University of the Punjab, Lahore. Her commitment to advancing English language instruction is further reflected in her participation in the HEC-funded ELTR Phase II Research Project, where she explored Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) in English Language Teaching (ELT).
Internationally recognized for her contributions to education and research, Dr. Raza was awarded the prestigious Erasmus+ Grant, through which she completed advanced training at USAK University in Turkey. Her unwavering dedication to English studies, teacher training, and literary scholarship continues to inspire future generations of educators and writers.
Dr. Amra Raza, a distinguished HEC-Approved Supervisor, has made significant contributions to academic mentorship and research supervision. She has successfully guided five PhD scholars to completion and is currently overseeing the research of three more PhD students. In addition to her doctoral supervision, she has mentored 31 MPhil scholars, ensuring the production of high-quality research in the field. Her extensive experience also includes supervising the theses of 389 students in M.A. English and the Postgraduate Diploma in English Language Teaching (PGD-ELT) at the University of the Punjab. Her dedication to academic excellence continues to shape future scholars and educators in the discipline.
