Dr. Akmal Hussain, a renowned economist, specializes in economic policy, development, and sustainability. He has advised Pakistani governments and contributed to global Sustainable Development Goals. With a PhD from the University of Sussex and degrees from Cambridge, he is recognized for his policy discussions, research, and advocacy for inclusive, sustainable development.

Bio

Dr. Akmal Hussain is an esteemed academic with a B.A. Honours and M.A. from the University of Cambridge and a Doctorate in Development Economics from the University of Sussex. He currently serves as the Distinguished Professor and Dean of the School of Social Sciences and Humanities at the Information Technology University, Lahore, and Co-chairs the South Asia Centre for Policy Studies. Throughout his career, Dr. Hussain has been a prominent figure in international development discussions, presenting at prestigious conferences including those hosted by Harvard University, the Society for International Development in Rome, and the UNDP.

His extensive research work has contributed to organizations such as the World Bank and the ILO. As an advisor to the government of Pakistan, Dr. Hussain was a member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Consultative Committee between 1989 and 2001, and again in 2010-11. He has also been a key participant in policy discussions at Wilton Park (UK) and at forums organized by the governments of the Netherlands and Japan. Recently, he played a significant role in the UNDP's deliberations in Bonn on the Sustainable Development Goals, contributing to the drafting of the SDGs document.

Dr. Hussain has been instrumental in establishing organizations focused on poverty alleviation and sustainable development at various levels, from village to regional. He was the principal author of the UNDP Pakistan National Human Development Report 2003 and the UNDP Report on Inclusive and Sustainable Development 2017. With over 40 books authored or co-authored on development, Dr. Hussain is a leading figure in the field, contributing extensively to global policy and research on sustainable development.

The joint Report of the Group specifying concrete proposals for regional cooperation was submitted to the Heads of State of SAARC in their Colombo Summit in 1991. Almost all the proposals were adopted by the Summit. The IGSAC Report was titled: SAARC: Moving Towards Core Areas of Cooperation.
