The Gurmani Centre for Languages and Literature at LUMS hosted the launch of Prof. Dr. Tariq Rahman’s latest book, The Handbook of Mirza Ghalib’s Poetry and Poetics: Commentaries and Contemporary Concerns (published by Springer, New York) on September 26, 2024.
Dr. Rahman, a valued faculty member and former Dean of the School of Education at Beaconhouse National University (BNU), offers a comprehensive exploration of Mirza Ghalib’s Urdu couplets in this groundbreaking work. The launch event featured a distinguished panel discussion, including Dr. Anjum Altaf, Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at LUMS and co-author of Thinking with Ghalib: Poetry for a New Generation, alongside Dr. Nasir Abbas Nayyar, a prominent critic and fiction writer. The discussion delved into various interpretations of Ghalib’s poetry, with a special focus on the role of women in the Urdu ghazal tradition. The session concluded with a lively Q&A, where attendees engaged with the speakers on contemporary concerns surrounding Ghalib's work. The event was well-received, showcasing the lasting relevance of Ghalib’s poetry in modern discourse.
