    Rashid Rana is widely regarded as one of the leading contemporary artists working in South Asia today. He is the founding faculty member and head of the Fine Arts Department at Beaconhouse National University. His work has been extensively showcased in various national and international exhibitions, exhibitions at Art Dubai, Dubai; Lisson Gallery, Milan; Mohatta Palace Museum, Karachi; New Art Exchange, Nottingham; Nelson Atkins Museum, Kansas City; Singapore Art Museum; Hong Kong Art Centre; Musée Guimet, Paris; Saatchi Gallery, London; Asia Society, New York; House of World Cultures, Berlin; Institute of the Modern Art, Brisbane and others.

    A recipient of the Pride of Performance Award in 1999, Prof. Salima Hashmi is an internationally renowned Pakistani artist, writer, art historian, art curator and educationist. She taught at National College of Arts for 31 years before working as its principal for four years. She is one of the key persons who founded Beaconhouse National University and School of Visual Arts and Design. She is a reputed painter whose works have been exhibited in Pakistan and in international exhibitions. She has written extensively on the arts, and has curated exhibitions of contemporary art and traditional textile.

    Profile: A recipient of the title of Knight in the Order of Arts and Literature by the Republic of France in 2010 for her services to art and culture, Professor Naazish Ata-Ullah is an internationally acclaimed artist, art educator, curator, writer, social and human rights activist who has been involved in teaching, faculty mentoring, curriculum development of studio art programs, and development of masters program in SVAD. She has been instrumental in development of the MA Art Education program at BNU, which is the first MA program in Art Education in the country.

    Profile: David Alesworth is well-known visual artist and landscape designer who is leading the Foundation Studies program at SVAD, BNU. Some of his most acclaimed works include mixed media site-specific installations made in Karachi in the 1990s. He worked with artists and crafts people to create truck paintings and shrine-like shipping containers that exceeded conventional binaries of high art and popular craft, modern and traditional, local and foreign. He has exhibited his work at Aga Khan Museum, Toronto (2014), Berlin Biennale, Germany (2014); Lines of Control, British Council, London (2011); Gardens of Babel, Rhotas-2 Gallery, Lahore (2011); and Half-Life, NCA Gallery, Lahore (2009). His work is also found in collections at the Pakistan National Collection, Islamabad; the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Japan; and the Queensland Art Gallery, Brisbane.

    Profile: The recipient of the Abraaj Group Art Prize 2013, Huma Mulji works with sculpture, photography, drawing, and painting, creating material juxtapositions which are attentive to the absurd, and question notions of ‘certainty’, and ‘truth’, through the use of digital imaging, reanimating objects through taxidermy, or creating clumsy, hybrid objects. She has showcased her work at different exhibitions in New York, London, South Korea, Dubai and other places.

    Profile: Kiran Khan, is associate professor and is head of the Textile, Fibre and Fashion studies department at BNU. She initially did a bachelor of design from National College of Arts, Lahore in textiles where her thesis titled, "The World Beyond the Senses" was awarded a distinction. She was also awarded the prestigious, Percy Brown Award for art history and two gold medals for her performances as part of the NCA puppet team, called The Puppeteers NCA. She joined the Pakistan School of Fashion Design ( PSFD) where she taught for eight years and developed the textile curriculum. During her time at PSFD she went to Paris to pursue further studies in textile design, accessories and fashion drawing from La Chambre Syndicale De la Couture, France. She was also selected by JETRO, Japanese External Trade Organisation for further training at Bunka College of Fashion ,Tokyo. She joined BNU and established the textile design department. She has been with BNU for ten years now since its birth a decade ago. She has had training in conservation of textiles and has recently completed her Masters Degree in Linguistics which she feels is an essential link between the arts. She feels that "all textiles convey a different story and it is this story we understand through language". The department of textile is actively engaged in craft revival and was awarded an international award for a community craft Project in collaboration with Sungi and Bunyaad under the Punjab Skills Development Programme to empower women of Southern Punjab called the Humnawa Project. She also designs for the textile sector and has developed designs for Mausummery Lawn, Sitara Textiles, and Five Star Lawn.

  • Sahr Bashir | Jewelry & Accessory Designer

    Profile: Sahr Bashir is the Head of the Jewelry & Accessory Department at SVAD. Having over fifteen years of experience in the Education sector, she took the lead in establishing the department, which is first of its kind in Pakistan. She has played a pivotal role in developing curricula and educational materials in addition to training faculty, professionals, craftspeople and students. As a visual artist, Sahr has represented Pakistan at many international platforms, most recently in Delhi & Beijing. She was awarded the Alumni Excellence Award for Education by the Australian Government in April 2014 for her contributions in skills training, community development and design interventions through education.

    Profile: Gwendolyn Kulick has been associated with the Department of Visual Communication Design at SVAD since 2004. She teaches courses design history and design theory as well as design strategy in diverse studio courses. Occasionally, she executes print publication projects, works as a design consultant, conducts workshops and contributes and reviews writings on design education.

    Profile: Malcolm Hutcheson is a graduate of Photographic Arts, from the London College of Printing (London Institute). He has worked as the Director of Photography in a number of international acclaimed projects and has conducted several Photography workshops. His work has been exhibited in Paris, Dubai, Holland, London and other countries.
